The World Health Organisation calls climate change "the greatest threat to human health in the 21st century." We need innovative solutions.

The scale of the climate crisis is immense - and its repercussions are toxic to human health. Whether through rising temperatures, air pollution or changing patterns of disease, climate change is having a profound effect on our wellbeing.

A societal shift powered by innovation is needed. At this event, we’ll bring together academics and industry experts to explore ideas and what this environmental emergency means for human health. With a wide range of topics - from sustainable production to reducing air pollution - we hope to broaden discussion and realise the potential of multidisciplinary research to tackle the most pressing issue of our generation.

You will hear talks from several experts together with a panel discussion, followed by a networking session where food and drink will be provided.

Speakers

Michael Evans is a serial entrepreneur dedicated to finding innovative technological and commercial solutions to tackling climate change. He is the CEO of Cambridge Carbon Capture Ltd, a start-up developing game changing CO2 capture and mineralisation technology permanently converting CO2 to valuable mineral by-products, which has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions driving climate change. Previously, he has founded and co-founded a number of cleantech companies including CMR Fuel Cells plc and Green-Tide Turbines Ltd. He is an active lobbyist on climate change policy and a member of the Science, Innovation and Industry Committee reporting to the Greater Cambridge and Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership.

Theresa is the Lead Toxicologist at CEA, a research and consultancy group offering high tier environmental risk assessment expertise for chemicals, toxicology and REACH compliance. She is an expert in product risk assessment, encompassing both chemicals and consumer products. She started her career in contract research, evaluating the safety of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, and went on to work for Unilever as a Toxicologist within the Safety Environmental Assurance Centre (SEAC), and then for Walgreens Boots Alliance as a Senior Product Safety Manager. Theresa is a Chartered Biologist and has an International Diploma in Toxicology.

Ting Lye is Co-founder and CEO of Ambify, an early-stage start-up providing integrated hardware and software solutions for environmental health risk monitoring. Throughout her career, Ting has worked across the US, Europe and Asia in both public and private sectors within the healthcare industry, implementing data-driven health solutions. Her expertise includes population health consulting, medical insurance and digital health.

Gareth is a Business Director at Cambond, a Cambridge start-up company developing readily available biopolymers and biomass to manufacture next-generation adhesive platforms for the wood panel industry, packaging, medical devices and cosmetics. Gareth started his career as a Neuroscience and Anatomy Academic Teacher at Imperial College Medical School, and then moved to big pharma as a Group Director in SmithKline Beecham. Gareth became involved with the biotechnology start-up scene in Cambridge and has founded several technology start-ups in the fields of informatics, genetics and stem cell biology. He has published over 200 scientific papers and 4 books, and has filed over 150 patents. He has extensive R&D management experience and a grasp of the uses and management of IP in developing a business.

Dr. Aldridge heads the Aquatic Ecology Group in Cambridge University's Department of Zoology. His interests focus on applied freshwater ecology and include projects across the world. In China and Bangladesh, he has used native taxa to help biomanipulate and restore eutrophic lakes and wetlands, and is training local scientists in the development of biotic indices to monitor water quality. His work has attracted a number of awards, including the World Bank's Development Award (2006) for sustainable improvement of water quality in developing countries and the Entec Medal (2007) for contributions towards environmental protection. He is also Co-founder and Managing Director of BioBullets Limited, a technology company with an environmentally safe solution for the control of invasive biofuels.
